Families in Need
Omar Daffeh and his family of 5 in Brikama, The Gambia : “I am the head of the family and the only bread winner of my family since the loss of my father and declining health of my mother. All 5 family members depend on me, and I am having a difficult time earning enough money to even buy enough food due to the lack of work in the area. I use to go to the bush and collect firewood, bringing it back to town on my head to buy food and water, but the government stopped us from going into the bush because they say it will cause deforestation, and you can be thrown in jail for that type of work now. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks until the whole family gets 3 full meals in a day.”
Omar Daffeh reached out to us for help through social media and since has been teaching us about the local ecology and keeping us informed on the food crisis in The Gambia where the government is making it harder to grow food locally due to taxes, fees, and cheap costs of imported foods. He and his family’s main goal is to be able to become self sufficient through gardening in the local area. He is a skilled gardener and has the potential to bring prosperity to his local area in Brikama through food cultivation. Although he has the skills and some tools, he lacks land, a good water source (a water well), and certain seeds and nutrients that are currently too expensive. Our goal is to reach $13,000 in donations. The donations provided by you will not only help feed Omar and his family, $60 a week for all 6 family members, in desperate times, but will help Omar build the foundation to become self sufficient in gardening for his family and local town.
Organizations
The Houston Food Bank is an organization that receives dry food donations, which then get inspected for quality and edibility, and then distributes the donations directly to individuals, families, and meal providing centers, for example: soup kitchens. Clicking this image will lead you to the official website that explains how to contribute with your own food donations, how to volunteer your own time to help out the organization, and how to make a monetary donation to help out with operations.
